The GDPR and Ireland As an EU Regulation, the GDPR does not generally require transposition into Irish law, as EU Regulations have “direct effect”. In Ireland, we have introduced new legislation known as the Data Protection Act 2018 which was signed into law on 24 May 2018. Among its provisions, the Act: The GDPR (Chapter 5 - Article 44 onwards) sets out obligations on data controllers (those in charge of deciding what personal data is collected and how/why it is processed), on data processors (those who act on behalf of the controller) and gives rights to data subjects (the individuals to whom the data relates).
